Following a traumatic event, I cut my hair section by section, painting and pressing it onto a large paper to create an immersive drawing. Every moment marks a "cut" in time - each time I cut off a section of hair with the scissors, it highlights a severing - both of time and of physicality. With one snip, the hair goes from being a part of my body to becoming a remnant, and then an element in the process of art. I enact the desire to leave a record, while at the same time creating a large painting that embraces all of these elements: artist's body, mark, tools, ground. The video is both a trace of the performance and the drawing itself. Each step of the process is a trace or a record of the previous one. The video is projected on one wall of the gallery. On the remaining walls I print with the hair I've cut off, leaving yet another trace of my presence. Camerawork by Mike Drisgula and Pierre Cote Related works |
