Hairbody
Performance
2004
25 minutes
Presented at The Print Center as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival

In this live performance my body, painted white and printed with hair patterns, moves slowly inside a three-dimensional drawing, creating a space of quiet contemplation for the viewer. Hairbody resides in the boundary between visual art and dance, abstraction and figuration, and internal and external experiences of what it means to inhabit a body. Hairbody is part of an ongoing project examining hair and its dual associations with desire and repulsion, as a signifier of identity and a disguise.
